Tom Hardy shines as Michael Peterson, who began his criminal career at age 19 with an attempt to rob a post office, for which he was swiftly apprehended and sentenced to 7 years in prison. Subsequently Peterson has spent 34 years behind bars, 30 of which have been in solitary confinement as "Britain's most violent prisoner", an indominable criminal spirit, motivated not by greed, lust or self-interest but by a courageously nihilistic, treacherous and inventive contempt for his keepers, who seemingly cannot find the means to humanely contain him.
